چکیده

The enhancement of skin image in optical coherence tomography (OCT) imaging can help dermatologists to investigate tissue layers more accurately, hence the more efficient diagnosis. In this paper, we propose an image enhancement technique including speckle reduction, attenuation compensation and cleaning to improve the quality of OCT skin images. A weighted median filter is designed to reduce the level of speckle noise while preserving the contrast. A novel border detection technique is designed to outline the main skin layers, stratum corneum, epidermis and dermis. A model of the light attenuation is then used to estimate the absorption coefficient of epidermis and dermis layers and compensate the brightness of the structures at deeper levels. The undesired part of the image is removed using a simple cleaning algorithm. The performance of the algorithm has been evaluated visually and numerically using the commonly used no-reference quality metrics. The results shows an improvement in the quality of the images.

Speckle Noise Reduction for the Enhancement of Retinal Layers in Optical Coherence Tomography Images

Introduction One of the most important pre-processing steps in optical coherence tomography (OCT) is reducing speckle noise, resulting from multiple scattering of tissues, which degrades the quality of OCT images. Materials and Methods The present study focused on speckle noise reduction and edge detection techniques. Statistical filters with different masks and noise variances were applied on ...

An Adaptive Cluster-based Wiener Filter for Speckle Reduction of OCT Skin Images

Optical coherence tomography (OCT) has become a favorable device in the dermatology discipline due to its moderate resolution and penetration depth. OCT images however contain a grainy pattern, called speckle, due to the use of a broadband source in the configuration of OCT. So far, a variety of filtering techniques is introduced to reduce speckle in OCT images. Most of these methods are generi...

Optical Coherence Tomography Technology and Quality Improvement Methods for Optical Coherence Tomography Images of Skin: A Short Review

Optical coherence tomography (OCT) delivers 3-dimensional images of tissue microstructures. Although OCT imaging offers a promising high-resolution method, OCT images experience some artifacts that lead to misapprehension of tissue structures. Speckle, intensity decay, and blurring are 3 major artifacts in OCT images. Speckle is due to the low coherent light source used in the configuration of ...

The Application of Multi-Layer Artificial Neural Networks in Speckle Reduction (Methodology)

Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) uses the spatial and temporal coherence properties of optical waves backscattered from a tissue sample to form an image. An inherent characteristic of coherent imaging is the presence of speckle noise. In this study we use a new ensemble framework which is a combination of several Multi-Layer Perceptron (MLP) neural networks to denoise OCT images. The noise is...

Improved quality of optical coherence tomography imaging of basal cell carcinomas using speckle reduction.

BACKGROUND Optical coherence tomography (OCT) is a possible imaging method for delineation of non-melanoma skin cancer. Speckle noise is the dominant noise contribution in OCT images; it limits the ability to identify cellular structures especially skin cancer. QUESTIONS ADDRESSED: This report suggests a method for improving OCT image quality for skin cancer imaging. EXPERIMENTAL DESIGN OCT i...
